AppleTV Too Late?
The AppleTV has a fairly big hype and I myself watched as a co-worker opened up one in joy the first day it was available. However, I'm a skeptic of anything Mac or PC so I've been doing a little research. First, I was disappointed that I don't have a HDTV so I can't really use the AppleTV without an adapter which will cost a lot.
That's besides the point. My point here is AppleTV isn't some new amazing idea or technology. In fact, there already exists alternatives...before the AppleTV was even released. Take for instance the Buffalo Link Theatre. The Link Theatre streams more media formats than the AppleTV and even has a DVD player built into it. Moreoever, they allow you to hook things into it's USB port by default. Something AppleTV said you can't do (but you can). The Buffalo Link Theatre holds nothing back from it's customers and is a great use of technology. It's even compatible with older and newer TVs. 720p, 1080i and the composite/component jacks. Buffalo also has another product, a Terabyte storage server that works with their products. They thought of everything whereas AppleTV didn't. It's quite apparent Apple wasn't interested in making a better product...they just wanted to make a product. I don't have either an AppleTV or a Link Theatre, but if I were to go out today and buy one, it would be the Link Theatre hands down.
I believe it does everything an AppleTV does and more for less. It's going for about $230 USD. I didn't even know it existed until I did some research. This goes to show how good Apple's marketing is. I think that's about the only thing that's going for the company ... despite the fact that I work on a Mac every day (and a PC). No, I think some things about Apple are good, but they need to stop overcharging for inferior technology. They can be so much better but they aren't. That's why I dislike Apple. They like to bend us over and make us believe that we like it. What's another wonder of Apple? iPhone? Oh yea I forgot I already have better phone. Next?
